Father Sam prepares the Ashes

Father Sam and children from St Patrick’s primary school spent time preparing the ashes for Ash Wednesday services in both our Parishes.
Father explained the concept of Ash Wednesday and why ashes are placed on the forehead as a sign of penance. The children were able to see first hand how the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday become this year’s ashes for Ash Wednesday. It was a wonderful experience and something they had not seen before. After lots of questions and interesting comments, Father Sam asked the children to consider what they might ‘give-up’ for Lent and closed the morning with a prayer. Thank you to the Teachers who accompanied the children and to all the children who were so well behaved during the process.
